Since she was six years old, proudly shuffling along in fuzzy, UGA slippers, Chloe Hamby ’19 has dreamed of two things: being a Georgia Bulldog and becoming a lawyer. Now in her sophomore year at the University of Georgia, Chloe has achieved the former and is hard at work on the latter. It was not an easy path for Chloe to get to where she is; her family has struggled with illness, financial difficulties and even homelessness. These adversities, however, have only increased Chloe’s drive. She is determined to not only reach her goals, but also help others who have had similar struggles.
When Chloe was in elementary school, her father was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. Her father’s health issues, compounded with the medical bills that quickly followed, took a toll on her family’s already stretched income. When Chloe reached the fourth grade, her family lost their home and found themselves homeless. Suddenly, Chloe’s dreams of one day attending the University of Georgia seemed unreachable.
Even though it felt like so much was standing between Chloe and a UGA degree, she never lost sight of her dreams. She worked hard in school and stayed focused in order to serve as a role model for her younger sister. Today, Chloe feels the obstacles she overcame have made her more appreciative of the help she has been given. She knows never to take anything for granted.
“The lessons I learned are lessons that some people never have to learn, but I honestly wouldn’t have it any other way,” said Chloe. “I am so proud of where I am today.”
When Chloe received the Georgia Access Scholarship that helped her to afford and attend UGA, she was elated and even more determined to do her best. The Georgia Access Scholarship is funded by private donations and administered by the UGA Foundation. The scholarship provides critical support to students who are unable to afford the full cost of attendance even when they have financial aid, such as a HOPE or Zell Miller scholarship or Federal Pell Grants.

“If I didn’t have my scholarship, I wouldn’t be here today,” said Chloe. “The fact that people I’ve never met before are willing to help me get my education makes me extremely motivated to work hard and achieve my goals.”
Chloe’s scholarship made attending UGA possible and now she is taking advantage of every opportunity on campus. A political science major and philosophy minor, Chloe recently joined UGA Model UN, an interactive simulation of the United Nations that challenges students to debate about pressing international issues. UGA’s many resources have pushed Chloe to expand her career goals. She now strives to become a lawyer and also, one day, a Georgia state legislator, or a U.S. Supreme Court Justice.
Chloe believes that both the hardships she has overcome and the unparalleled education she is receiving in the UGA School of Public and International Affairs will make her a well-versed and empathetic leader.
“I want to be that person who makes a difference, who makes a change and helps people who have gone through hardships like those my family experienced.”
